Universal Boring and Facing Heads

Universal Boring and Facing Heads

Universal Boring and Facing Heads have a built-in auto-feed mechanism making them a very versatile accessory for the mill.

A universal boring and facing head will carry out the same boring operations as a standard, manually adjusted boring head, but the auto-feed can be set to automatically advance the boring tool laterally by a set amount upon each revolution of the spindle making it capable of the following operations:

Universal Boring and Facing Head Features

How the Auto-Feed Works

Auto-Feed Activation:

  • Using a small flat bladed screwdriver, press the safety pin down into the slot in the graduated ring.
  • Turn the control ring to point the red line at the desired feed setting: 2, 4 or 6 = 0.02mm/rev, 0.04mm/rev or 0.06mm/rev.
  • Note: Setting 0 is Off (no feed) even when the safety pin is engaged.

Operating the Auto-Feed:

  • Insert the end of the stop bar into the hole in the braking ring and (for safety) rest it against something solid on the machine.
  • Now, when the spindle rotates, the slide will be advanced on every spindle revolution by the distance you dialed-in earlier.
  • Note: The slide will not auto-feed while the braking ring is rotating with the head.

End Stop Settings:

  • To set the end stop position, adjust the dogs on the back of the head, measuring the distance between the dog pin and the dog with an internal micrometer, slip gauge or vernier and lock in place.
  • When the dog pin reaches a dog at the end of a cut, the safety pin will be ejected from the slot in the graduated ring, disengaging the auto-feed.

The Safety Pin and Detent Adjustment:

  • The safety pin has two concentric grooves which function as detent positions (engaged/disengaged) in combination with a spring loaded detent pin and adjusting screw.
  • The spring pressure on the detent pin regulates the level of resistance required to disengage the auto-feed. It should be set to eject the safety pin when: a) the dog pin hits the dog at the end of a cut or b) the cutting tool becomes blunt, breaks or crashes.
  • Take care to avoid locking this screw too tightly since this may prevent the safety pin from disengaging the auto-feed at the end of a cut.
  • Test the proper release of the safety pin before making an auto-feeding cut.

Rapid Return Screw:

  • Multiple depth cuts are made easy - use the rapid return screw to rewind the head to the start position.
