Spiral Flute and Spiral Point machine taps are designed to evacuate chips from the hole and prevent the chip congestion that can occur with straight flute taps.

The flutes of Spiral Point taps have an angled cutting face on the first few threads designed to push the chips ahead of the tap and out the bottom of the hole. The angled face creates a shearing action which cuts more easily than conventional taps and produces a finer finish. The flutes are also shallower than spiral flute or hand taps so are stronger than both.

They are primarily used for tapping through holes but may be used to tap blind holes provided the unthreaded portion of the hole is deep enough to accommodate all the chips produced.
